New City

The New City community area was once home to the Union Stock Yards, and although most early residents "worked for the stock yards or its auxiliary industries," they typically lived in different areas within the community based on their class and ethnic background. These areas, which are now the present-day neighborhoods of Back of the Yards and Canaryville, never quite identified themselves with the New Citydesignation. While the ethnic makeup in these communities has changed over the years, they are still somewhat racially divided; Irish-Americans predominantly reside in Canaryville, "Mexican-Americans in Back Of The Yards, and African-Americans south of 49th Street."
